Brief Introduction to Cosmetic Clamshell Packaging

A clamshell is a packaging style consisting of two hinged halves that resemble the shape of a shell, allowing the packaging to be opened and closed like a book. Typically made from materials like PET or PVC, clamshells provide both product protection and visibility. Their transparent design makes them ideal for showcasing items such as electronics, cosmetics, toys, and food products.

Types of Cosmetic Clamshell Packaging

Clamshells
Technically a clamshell is a blister pack that folds onto itself and this type of packaging can be used for many products and has many advantages. Clamshells can be well-sealed, using RF welding or heat sealing, to prevent damage from moisture and tampering. Of course, on the flip side, this tight seal can make it challenging for consumers to open clamshells. Still, if tampering has been a big issue for your product and packaging, a clamshell can be an excellent option. Keep in mind, that we certainly can design easy-open clamshells, as well as tightly sealed clamshells, depending on your needs.

Tri-Fold Clamshells
A tri-fold clamshell can be a versatile option, as the tri-fold design can allow your product to stand up on its own or, because it includes a peg hole, it can hang on a peg wall. Tri-fold clamshells also can be designed to stack nearly in a point-of-purchase. Since this package can be displayed in multiple ways, it makes it easy for retailers to find a way to display your product.

Advantages of Cosmetic Clamshell Packaging

In-Store Salesperson - Your Silent Salesman
Professional marketers apply the term "silent salesman" to packages like clamshell packaging, blister packaging, and Point of Purchase displays. Most retail chains do not have enough staff to market all of the products that are in their store, so in order for you product to standout, your package has to market itself. That is accomplished through package design and eye catching graphics, something clamshell packaging easily lends itself to. Many ways of attracting customers are by using Point of Purchase displays, graphics on your insert or blister card or labels on your clamshell.

Provide a Clear Product Display
Clamshell packaging and containers help shoppers see and feel the quality of a product, further aiding in their purchase decision. More than half of shoppers agree it's important to see a product through its packaging. Another benefit of transparent clamshell packaging is its fresh or clean appearance. Nearly one third of shoppers gauge how fresh a product is by its appearance, rather than its use-by date. Clamshell packaging can help increase shoppers' initial perception of food freshness and demonstrates that what you see is what you get. Such packaging also may be proving the point that it does not contain any unnatural ingredients or additives.

Provides Product Protection
Clamshell packaging provide excellent protection and, if they are sealed, it greatly reduces theft. And while clamshells are an excellent display for showcasing your product, they will also provide a longer shelf life and extended package performance. Clamshells, due to the nature of the thermoformed plastic that they are made out of, convey premium packaging with strong visual impact due to their rigidity and durability.

Theft Deterrent Packaging
In today's times of escalating retail theft and product shrinkage, packages are specifically designed so that the customer cannot "touch and feel" the product. Clear, protective, and durable thermoformed plastic packaging enables the customer to fully view the product while maintaining the security of the product. Thermoformed plastic packaging can easily be sealed using ultrasonic, RF or UV sealing methods.

Application of Cosmetic Clamshell Packaging

Mascara, lipstick/lip gloss, eyeshadow palettes, blush and bronzer, nail polish sets, false eyelashes, compact powders, single-use sheet masks, travel-sized products, hair accessories, sample packs, beauty tools, lip balm, travel-sized fragrances, single-use makeup wipes can all be packaged with cosmetic clamshell packaging. These cosmetics product examples showcase the versatility and beauty of clamshell packaging. Whether it's the convenience of hinged design, the protection it offers, or the visually appealing aesthetic, clamshell packaging adds a touch of sophistication and innovation to any cosmetics line.

precautions for product use

01/

Radio Frequency (RF) Sealing: RF sealing uses electromagnetic energy similar to a microwave to heat and bond materials together under pressure. If you have a product that has to be securely sealed, this is the best option; it is the only method to guarantee a hermetic seal. RF sealing works best with PVC or PETG.

02/

Hot/Cold Seal: Hot/Cold sealing connects plastic to plastic using thermal energy and pressure to create a bond at the flange of a two-piece package. The bonding process is two stages, starting with a heat and pressure cycle that relaxes the plastic molecules, allowing the bond to be created. Next is a cool-down cycle that allows the seal area to stiffen. A hot/cold seal is typically used in smaller, lightweight packages or for electronics that may be damaged with RF sealing.

03/

Ultrasonic: Ultrasonic bonding is created by the mechanical action of a high frequency acoustic vibration of the overlapping plastic surfaces under pressure. A specially designed machine transfers vibratory motion into the plastic via a tool called a "horn", causing the plastic to rapidly heat and melt. The horn holds the molten plastic pieces together under pressure until cooled. The tooling for this method can be expensive, and the size of the seal area is limited. It may require larger packages to be rotated multiple times to fully seal. However, the quick seal cycle makes ultrasonic sealing an attractive option for large-volume items.

04/

Ultraviolet (UV) Sealing: UV sealing involves the use of an adhesive that is activated by exposure to ultraviolet radiation. When exposed to certain levels of UV light, cross-linking of the polymer occurs and it begins to harden and create bonds with the plastic surface. Adhesive cure times range from one to thirty seconds. Tooling costs for UV sealing are minimal, but the seals can be unpredictable.

05/

Impulse Sealing: Impulse sealing uses short bursts of energy to heat a sealing bar. The bar is then brought into contact with the mating parts of the package structure. The heat is only applied as long as needed, but the sealing bar remains in contact with the package until the seal is cooled and the bond is created. This process is simple and safe; however, the relatively long seal times make impulse sealing a better option for lower-volume items.

06/

Additional Sealing Options: If your product does not require extensive theft/damage resistance, there are other options available. For very small runs, using staples along the flange are a manual but inexpensive method to secure your product in the package. A seal can also be built into the package by designing button snaps to hold the two pieces of plastic together.

Considerations for Specifying Cosmetic Clamshell Packaging

A - Size

What is the size, shape and delicate nature of the part that you want to package? This is necessary for Walter Drake to understand how the package will hold your content. Will your clamshell package house a single item or multiple items? What are the measurements of your product and how many will be packed in the clamshell? Whatever options you have you will need to determine:
Length
Width
Height

B - Material

Nearly all clamshells utilize some type of clear plastic material so that consumers can see the product and we typically manufacture PVC, PET, HIPS, PETG and Polypropylene.
PVC is the most common
PET is FDA approved and is environmentally friendly.

C - Thickness

What is the weight of the product you are packaging?
Thicker clamshell walls are usually required for heavier items.
Thinner walls may be utilized for lighter products.
Shipping and Protection.
Heavier walls may be used for better protection of your products but will also increase cost and weight of the clamshells.
If corrugated or foam inserts are used, thinner walls may be possible.

D - Merchandising

Graphic insert card or literature - such a requirement may need a flat-bottomed pocket.
Does inserted literature need to be seen from the closed package?
Color and appearance. If not a clear color do you have a specific color match needed?

E - Packaging Specifics

Is the package going to be sterilized after loading?
Do you need conductive, static dissipative or ESD?
Do you have cleanroom requirements?
How many packages you will put in each shipping cartons.

F - Pricing

Many factors will influence pricing of your clamshell packaging including:
Thickness of material
Type of material
Quantity ordered and number of releases
